Saskatchewan pot stores ‘go green’ with recycling program for cannabis packaging

With legal pot packaging piling up, some Saskatchewan cannabis retailers are making an effort to “go green” by introducing recycling bins designed for marijuana packaging in their stores.   “Some of the concerns I’ve heard from customers is mostly the footprint that we’re leaving with this packaging,” said Falon Rothe, associate manager at Tweed in Regina.   Most marijuana is sold in single-use plastic containers, each holding a specific amount set by federal guidelines.   With the industry’s rapid growth and the bulky packaging piling up, Tweed has partnered with U.S.-based TerraCycle to create a recycling program for these items.   “We care a lot about the environment, we care a lot about what our customers think, we care a lot about the consumer as well,” Rothe said.   The program accepts any and all cannabis packaging purchased from a licensed retailer, including tins, joint tubes, plastic caps and flexible plastic bags.   But it’s not just chain stores that are jumping on board, as Saskatoon’s Living Skies Cannabis started collecting containers last month.   “Just make sure you take all your goodies out of the container. You don’t have to rinse it out under water or anything, just give it a wipeout and come and drop it off in our TerraCycle recycling bin,” said store owner Cierra Sieben-Chuback.   “It’s just one of those things that need to be done to combat the waste and protect our planet.”   Once TerraCycle picks up the packaging, it’s melted down into plastic pellets and used as a material in items like park benches and playgrounds.

Gillette To Offer Recycling of Disposable Razors

Announces new brand-blind US program with TerraCycle. Through a new partnership between Gillette and TerraCycle, all brands of disposable razors, replaceable-blade cartridge units and razor plastic packaging can be recyclable on a national-scale in the US. “Through this innovative, first of its kind program, disposable razors, replaceable-blade cartridge units and their associated packaging are now nationally recyclable through the Gillette Recycling Program,” said TerraCycle CEO and founder Tom Szaky. “We are proud to partner with this forward-thinking company to offer consumers a way to divert razor waste from landfills.” According to the P&G-owned brand and TerraCycle, consumers are invited to recycle their razors in three ways: • Gillette Razor Recycling Program - Participants wishing to recycle their razors from home are invited to sign up on the program page https://www.terracycle.com/en-US/brigades/gillette. When ready to ship their waste, they can simply download a self-funded TerraCycle tracking label, package the razors in a secure, puncture-proof package and send it to TerraCycle for recycling. • Gillette Razor Local Recycling Solutions – Businesses, gyms, colleges, cities and community organizations are invited to become public drop-off points for the Gillette Razor Recycling Program. Participants interested in becoming a drop-off point are invited to sign up on the program page https://www.terracycle.com/en-US/brigades/gillette-local-recycling. After acceptance to the program, they will be sent an exclusive razor recycling bin developed by TerraCycle and Gillette. Once full, they can simply seal and return the bin to TerraCycle via UPS and a new one will be sent back to them. The address listed in the account will be posted on the publicly-available map of local recycling solutions on the Gillette Razor Recycling Program page. • Gillette On Demand Razor Recycling Program – Consumers that participate in the Gillette On Demand subscription service are also invited to recycle their razors through the Gillette Razor Recycling Program. They can sign up on the program page at https://www.terracycle.com/en-US/brigades/gillette-on-demand; when they are ready to ship their waste, they can simply download a self-funded TerraCycle tracking label, repackage the used razors in the Gillette On Demand delivery box and send it to TerraCycle for recycling. “We are very excited about our partnership with TerraCycle to offer recycling for Gillette, Venus or any razor brand across the U.S. This is an important first step towards sustainable solutions for shaving products and the start of an exciting journey with Gillette and TerraCycle. We are thrilled to bring this option to our consumers in the U.S. and are already working on plans to rollout to more countries very soon,” said Gillette CEO, Gary Coombe. Organizations that participate in the Gillette Razor Local Recycling Solutions as a public drop-off location earn money for the waste that they recycle through TerraCycle’s Sponsored Waste Recycling Program. For every shipment weighing at least fifteen pounds, collectors earn points that can be used for charity gifts or converted to cash and donated to charities of their choice. The collected packaging will be recycled into a variety of new consumer products such as park benches, bike racks, pet food bowls and recycling bins.

How to Recycle Your Used Razors

Have a bunch of used razors lying around your bathroom? Well, forget throwing them in the trash where they’d usually land—now, you can recycle all your disposable razors, hairs and all, and all it takes is a simple package in the mail. This week, Gillette announced it’s partnering with TerraCycle, an online recycling program, to collect razors and blades of all kinds and brands. What types, exactly? Think of any plastic disposable type, as well as any replaceable-blade cartridges. The program will even accept all the rigid or flexible plastic packaging that comes with your razors. According to the program’s website, your razors won’t be re-used to shave another stranger’s legs or neck. Instead, any plastic material will be cleaned and recycled into new products like picnic tables, benches, and even pet food bowls. Meanwhile, the metal from the razors will be smelted for re-use by manufacturers. While the exact impact of disposable razors isn’t known, an EPA statistic back from the 90s estimated that Americans throw away some 2 billion razors each year. And think about how that number has probably changed dramatically, given that so many gym and spas now stock locker rooms with a near limitless supply of disposable razors (not to mention the rise of buzzy, low-cost brands like Harry’s and Dollar Shave Club, which promote re-usable razors with disposable blades).

So give your old razors a quick rinse and pat dry (though the program’s website doesn’t explicitly require it, it’s just good etiquette, in our opinion) and ship ‘em off! It’s safe to say they’ll serve a much better purpose by helping improve our public spaces as benches than in our landfills.

Herbal Essences' New Bottles Uses Plastic Recycled From Beaches

Herbal Essences is joining the eco-friendly movement, and we’re loving it.   The brands new ‘Beach Plastic‘ collection uses bottles made with 25 percent recycled plastic cleaned up from beaches. Not only are the bottles made from a percentage of recycled materials, but the bottles directly use the trash that is polluting coastlines!     We all know that ocean pollution — plastic being a major culprit — can wreak havoc on marine life as well as litter beaches. And in a sad twist, a lot of this plastic turns out to be non-recyclable due to levels of dirt and exposure to nature. In other words, organizations that clean up beaches send the plastic straight to the garbage, which will end up in landfill.   This collection all started in honor of World Water Day, which falls on March 22. Herbal Essences teamed up with TerraCycle to find a solution to eliminate non-recyclable plastic waste and to bring awareness to plastic pollution. TerraCycle is a recycling company that has made it its specialty to reuse hard to recycle materials. The organization collects non-recyclable waste that is a product of pre-consumer and post-consumer debris, and partners with corporations to turn it into raw materials to be used in new products.     According to Allure, Herbal Essences estimates that it will save an estimated three tons of beach plastic from ending up in the trash!   Now if you’re wondering about what’s inside of the new and improved bottle, don’t worry – it’s the Herbal Essences you know and love. White Grapefruit & Mosa Mint, Argan Oil, and Coconut Milk are the scents getting an eco-friendly makeover with the Beach Plastic launch.   Remember – after you finish your bottle, rinse it and throw it in the recycling!
