This week we’ve teamed up with TerraCycle, the company that finds a way to upcycle waste. Not just any waste…often items that were destined for a landfill, not a recycling facility. For instance, right now you can bring in your flip-flops to Old Navy and TerraCycle will turn them into four public playgrounds around the country.

From Earth Day through May 21, Old Navy stores began accepting them in a specially marked bins inside stores. Your old flip flops will turn into material for future playgrounds thanks to a partnership between Old Navy and
TerraCycle. The program is called Flip Flop Brigade, and you can learn more about it

Spring is here and summer is right around the corner. It's time to
break out the season's favorite fashion combo, shorts and flip flops.
That grimy pair from last year won't cut it. Before you upgrade, drop
your old pair (or three) in a designated bin outside your nearest Old
Navy and put them to good use. The deadline is May 21st.

The Brigade begins on Earth Day Friday, April 22nd and runs until the bins are full or Saturday, May 21st (whichever comes first) in all continental US Old Navy stores.

Beginning on Earth Day and continuing through May 21, the green company TerraCycle is collecting ready to be discarded flip-flops at more than 900 Old Navy locations nationwide, including the location in Aiken. TerraCycle will then take the discarded flip-flops, which many people do not realize are very difficult to recycle and would sit in a landfill for a long time, and use the material to create four playgrounds in communities throughout the country.

In an effort to further reduce waste, TerraCycle, Inc. and Old Navy are partnering in a month-long drive to collect used flip flops and recycle them into four public playgrounds around the country. The community is encouraged to participate by stopping by an Old Navy store to deposit used flip flops in designated collection bins. This is the first time a nationwide retailer has initiated a large-scale effort to collect and recycle flip flops.
