On the heels of our country’s not-so-graceful exit from The Paris Agreement, I’ve been wanting to do something… anything… to make a difference, even if it’s a tiny one. Being that I’m just one person, I know that I probably can’t affect policy or convince a major corporation to take appropriate action, but I can do my part on a daily basis, and encourage you to do the same! There are countless things that we can all do to reduce our carbon footprint, but I’m specifically committing to the five below. It’s not about making huge lifestyle changes, just taking the time to be thoughtful about how you go about your day. They’re all easy and totally doable for pretty much anyone. Despite movement in Washington indicating a shift away from sustainability, I am of the firm belief that non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and nonprofits dedicated to supporting a science-backed policy agenda will to operate as stewards for environmental protection in the United States. Further, governments around the world (in part represented by the United Nations) will continue to demonstrate their view of sustainable development as an integral aspect of economic growth. This includes a shift in attention to sustainable development around the use of the world’s oceans. June 5-9 is the Ocean Conference, the high-level United Nations Conference to support the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. Coinciding with the global World Oceans Day, the Ocean Conference designed an official program for discussion around creating policy that ultimately enhances the conservation and sustainable use of oceans.

They say “You are what you eat” and that holds true not only for us humans but for our pets as well so I am concerned about what goes into my little Remington’s body. One of the most important factors consumers cite in their selection of eco-friendly products is the use of recycled content, and consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies are meeting their requests. Driven by increasing demand for products from companies committed to making positive social and environmental impacts, more and more manufacturers have publicly stated goals and have made commitments to increase the amount of post-consumer recycled (PCR) resins in their product packaging. CPG companies currently tend to fill this need with generic recycled materials (i.e. “rPET” or “rHDPE”). Sourced from recycled material suppliers selling resins aggregated from one or many municipal recycling facilities, generic recycled materials contain plastic from many different types of products and packaging, come from any number of places and have no traceability back to the original product or where the material was generated or collected.

CHINA:  L’Oréal-owned Ultra Doux has partnered with TerraCycle, marking the recycling leader’s inaugural program in beauty care in China. Ultra Doux, a new natural hair care brand, is China’s first brand to provide a comprehensive solution for hair care packaging waste. “It’s impressive for a brand such as Ultra Doux to take the global lead in protecting the environment through collection of their packaging,” said Tom Szaky, TerraCycle founder and global CEO. “Through the ambitious effort of having the Hair Care Recycling Program, we look forward to making an impact on reducing the amount of hair care packaging that is thrown away each year.”  

As a mom to little humans, one big challenge I face is what to feed them that’s 1) healthy 2) they’ll eat 3) that’s (relatively) easy. In talking with many other moms, this is pretty much a universal problem. With the three cats in our house (and the dog, too) this is a non-issue for me because we feed our cats Wellness and that meets the three requirements above in one easy swoop, especially with reformulated Complete Health line of dry and canned cat food products.
