You probably already recycle all your plastic and glass bottles, cardboard packaging and metal cans. You may even have a compost pile in your yard, to recycle food waste. If you do, pat yourself on the back! Good job! Recycling helps to conserve resources, saves energy, protects the environment and reduces the amount of trash in our landfills.   But what if there were other recyclable items in your home, right under your nose, that you simply didn’t know about? While we are doing A LOT, we could be doing more to increase the amount of waste we recycle, and decrease waste being sent to the landfill.

Fall is officially here!  Cooler temperatures, falling leaves and the intoxicating smells of autumn (like hot apple cider and pumpkin spice) are just a few of the reasons why the fall season is the best time of the year.  Plus, a delicious seasonal favorite we look forward to returning has made its way back to grocery shelves – Entenmann’s® Little Bites® Pumpkin Muffins!

When bringing this assumption up to my connections at Bausch + Lomb through advisory work, I was corrected and found that contact lenses, and the packaging they come in, are too small to be recycled. They just get filtered out of larger plastics sorting. Thankfully, though, a few years ago, Bausch + Lomb launched a partnership, the One-by-One Recycling Program, with TerraCycle, a specialty recycling company that works on “recycling the un-recyclable.” Contact lens waste from products of any brand, not just Bausch + Lomb, will be recycled.

Recycling is one of the best things you can do for the environment. It reduces landfill waste and diverts litter from the world’s oceans (hit with 10-20 million tons of plastic pollution every year) and prevents them turning into microplastics, tiny plastic particles that impact animals, natural ecosystems and, ultimately, humans. The eco action also conserves natural resources, offsetting the need to mine the planet for new, “virgin” materials.

To meet its goals, Natural Habitat will supply guests with zero-waste toolkits including reusable items like coffee mugs and cutlery. Sprinter vehicles will be outfitted with composting and recycling systems including TerraCycle, which breaks down hard-to-recycle items like granola bar wrappers. To ensure the trip is 100% carbon neutral, the company will offset the emissions from all flights, vehicles, hotels and boats used during the tour through programs such as reforestation initiatives. Guests will also have the option to offset their international or domestic pre-tour flights if they choose. The price of the trip — which starts at $5,695 — will be the same as Natural Habitat’s regular Yellowstone safaris. And in turn, Whelan says he hopes the experience will inspire partner hotels, restaurants and guests to embrace zero-waste techniques.

"Everyone knows it’s important for sustainable, responsible products to become mainstream. But if 'green' products aren’t as affordable, fun, or fashionable as traditional products, they never will become the status quo," says Lauren Taylor of TerraCyle. "We believe it’s important to make our eco-products desirable and cool, so kids want to use them, even if they don't know it’s the responsible thing to do. We’ve accomplished our goal when our products sell just because they’re 'cool' -- without us having to promote their 'greenness.'
