Australia Post keeps satchels out of landfill

Online shopping has increased the reliance on single-use, waterproof plastic satchels, which has created a new challenge for Australia Post - how should it effectively keep these satchels out of landfill? In order to solve this issue, the national mail service partnered with recycling organisation TerraCycle to initiate a free scheme that would allow consumers and businesses to return used plastic mailbags to be re-used and recycled into plastic park benches, chairs and other industrial items.

Meet the boss: TerraCycle chief Anna Minns

It's fair to say that in most personal relationships the decision to move for one partner's career doesn't always pan out for the both parties. Luckily, that wasn't the case for Anna Minns. The former criminal lawyer had already switched to working on environmentally focused projects by the time her first child was born. Then, her focus was the Daily Lime website, a project Minns founded (and won awards for) to provide readers with green tips including from high profile contributors such as Kevin Rudd and Tim Flannery.

TerraCycle recycling the ‘unrecyclable’

Anna Minns and the small local team that form TerraCycle are pulling off a ‘David & Goliath’ type feat in tackling the waste associated with major brands operating in Australia, writes Paula Wallace. It’s simple; it’s ingenious; and it seems to be working. Anna Minns told WME about how the start-up was collecting and storing massive amounts of waste in a Victorian warehouse that would have gone into landfills or otherwise entered the environment.
