Nether Green Infant School in Sheffield Becomes One of the UK's First Public Collection Points to Recycle Tassimo Coffee Machine T-Discs and Outer Foil Packaging
Nether Green Infant School on Stumperlowe Park Road in Sheffield has signed up as one of the UK's first public collection points for the Tassimo Brigade® to enable the people of Sheffield to recycle their Tassimo coffee machine T-DISCS and outer foil packaging, whilst raising funds for charities chosen by the school. Local people can now drop off their accepted Tassimo coffee waste to the public access collection box at Nether Green Infant School from Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 5pm.
The T-DISCS and the majority of coffee packaging waste unfortunately end up in landfill as local councils simply don't have the infrastructure to recycle mixed plastics. The waste however is recyclable, prompting Tassimo to partner with recycling experts TerraCycle in 2009 to set up the Tassimo Brigade® to offer a home recycling solution for consumers across the UK. To enable more people to participate and larger quantities of waste to be saved from landfill the search for public access drop off locations was launched in late October 2013.
The aim is for whole communities, like Sheffield to collect together via a nationwide network of drop off locations. This increases the efficiency of the programme with larger shipment sizes being sent in and reduces the environmental footprint of the programme. At the same time one chosen charity benefits from all the waste that is collected and sent into TerraCycle.
Steve Johnson, who is Buildings Officer at the school and will administrate the collections for the Sheffield Tassimo Brigade® location, commented: "We are delighted to house a collection box at Nether Green Infant School on Stumperlowe Park Road to enable the people of Sheffield to be one of the first communities in the UK to have a drop off location to be able to recycle their Tassimo T-DISCS and outer foil packaging waste. We also collect on the Activia Yogurt Brigade, Kenco Brigade, Writing Instrument Brigade, Mobile Phone Brigade and McVitie's Biscuit Wrapper Brigade, therefore you can also drop- off Activia Yogurt Pots, Kenco Coffee Packaging, any brand of writing instruments, any brand of Mobile Phones and any brand of biscuit wrappers, which we can send in as part of our collections to TerraCycle.
"Two TerraCycle points are earned for the weight of each piece of Tassimo waste that we send in for recycling, with each point being redeemable for a one penny contribution. All the money raised will be used to help fund charities chosen by Nether Green Infant School, so we encourage local people to drop off all their T-DISCS and outer foil packaging waste and tell all their friends and family to do the same. The aim is not only to save as much Tassimo coffee packaging waste from landfill as possible but also to raise as much as possible for our chosen charities."
The Tassimo Brigade® looks to extend the lifecycle of everyday coffee packaging waste whilst reducing landfill proliferation. The Tassimo T-DISCS and outer foil packaging waste will be recycled into generic plastic products such as park benches, watering cans and waste bins. This has a knock on effect by slowing the need to extract new resources from the planet as resources that would otherwise be lost to landfill are reused.
The details of the Tassimo Brigade public location at Nether Green Infant School in Sheffield are listed on the TerraCycle web page http://www.terracycle.co.uk/en-UK/brigades/the-tassimo-brigade-r.html where visitors are able to search for their nearest participating location.
Bethan Healy, Assistant Brand Manager for Tassimo UK comments: "Tassimo is proud to partner with TerraCycle to launch this new network of public drop off locations which for the first time provides whole communities the opportunity to recycle their waste Tassimo TDISCS and outer foil packaging, which would otherwise end up in landfill. We encourage the people of Sheffield to really get behind the scheme to not only make a difference to the local environment but also to raise money for Nether Green Infant School."
