Students at Sandburg Elementary School are among the top collectors of snack bags in The Hain Celestial Group Snack Bag Brigade, a free, national recycling program created by The Hain Celestial Group, Inc. and TerraCycle. By collecting used snack bags from foods such as The Hain Celestial Group’s Garden of Eatin’ snacks, Terra chips or any other brand, the students have helped to divert 19185 units of snack bag waste from landfills, while also earning $2,876 for their school or charity of choice. After they sign up to join a recycling Brigade, schools and organizations earn points for every unit of waste they collect and send to TerraCycle.
If you just can’t seem to make your old shoes look and feel better, then it’s time to get rid of them. Before tossing them in the trash, consider recycling them through places Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program or if they still have a little life left, donate them to a local charity or to TerraCycle’s Shoe Donation program.
In addition to recycling all acceptable materials that are collected by the Melrose DPW on a weekly basis, the Roosevelt School has formed a partnership with TerraCycle, which collects and recycles items, such as drink pouches, juice boxes, ink cartridges and writing instruments, that are not picked up by the city. The school also recycles its Styrofoam trays through ReFoamIt and expired markers through Crayola.
While Whirlpool does not recycle its products personally, it recently partnered up with TerraCycle. Oh wow, this is a cool organization. According to its website, “TerraCycle can recycle all PUR and Brita products, including pitchers, faucet mount systems, all types of water filters, and even the packaging.”
I visited
Etsy labs earlier this month, along with my TerraCycle teammates, to show others how to get their craft on. This is a great group project. You could make a crafternoon of it and drink canned beer, which can, in turn, become your upcycling material.
