People, schools and businesses can send their waste to TerraCycle Australia free via Australia Post to be recycled and receive two cents an item in return.

WE have been recycling our newspapers and glass bottles dutifully for years but there have remained some items not recyclable — until now. TerraCycle, a global company that opened its first Australian office recently, wants your empty toothpaste tubes, used coffee pod capsules, cleaning products containers — and cigarette butts. Australian branch general manager Anna Minns, of Carlton, said the company wanted the waste unwanted by everyone else.

TerraCycle has been called the “Google of garbage” by the New York Times and “the coolest little start-up in America” by Inc. Magazine. The City of Sydney’s Green Villages thinks these are pretty shrewd comparisons, considering the current in-demand job for change makers is in technology start-ups.

Imperial Tobacco Australia is helping to fund a pioneering scheme to recycle cigarette butts. The business is partnering with recycling firm Terracycle to encourage people over the age of 18 to sign up to its Cigarette Waste Brigade.

As the General Manager for TerraCycle Australia and New Zealand, I run a green business and work with waste! I started working with TerraCycle 18 months ago when I was living in New Jersey with my young family. I brought the TerraCycle recycling model back home to Australia and I also started operations in New Zealand last year. Terracycle is a US company with an interesting history and approach to recycling. It recently introduced its recycling model to Australia, and Communications Manager, Ausseela Thanaphongsakorn, answered some questions for The Switch Report.
