Canada's largest casino, through a partnership with TerraCycle, will be collecting cigarette waste separately from other garbage in a dedicated effort to reduce the casino's impact on the environment. Casino de Montréal will be part of TerraCycle Canada's Cigarette Waste Brigade program for used cigarette butts (as well as cigarette foil and plastic packaging waste). The items will be collected from the casino and diverted from landfills for the very first time. Cigarette butts are non-biodegradable and do not break down. The program will enable this pervasive waste item to be easily recyclable. "We are proud to launch the recycling program of cigarette waste with Terracycle," said Jacques Massé, the casion's Director of Administration. "This project is one of many initiatives undertaken by the Casino de Montreal to achieve its sustainable development action plan," he added. Casino site coordinators will collect cigarette litter and send the waste to TerraCycle to earn fundraising dollars. For every pound of cigarette waste collected, the casino will earn $1 towards a charity of their choice. The waste will be recycled into plastic pallets (also known as skids) for industrial use. Creating pallets from recycled cigarette waste will not only reduce the amount of litter, but will also reduce the need to use wood or virgin plastic to make commonly used industrial pallets. The organic parts of the waste - the paper, and remaining tobacco - will be composted. Empty chip bags, old toothbrushes and dried-out makeup: their days of going into the garbage are gone. The Oregon Department of Corrections is partnering with Terracycle, a New Jersey-based innovative recycling company, to kick-start unconventional recycling programs in the state prison system. Together, the prisons have collected more than 108,000 chip bags, keeping 1,300 pounds out of landfills and instead recycling them into bulk plastics through Terracycle’s Brigades programs. For each unit of trash — now recycling — donated to Terracycle, the company will award points that convert into donations for schools and charities. ODOC won the Recycler of the Year award from the group Mid-Valley Green Awards for conserving water and energy and recycling ballistic vests, metal, shoes, and flourescent light bulbs. In 2011, Terracycle collected old flip-flops—enough to donate the recycled rubber to four school playgrounds. In 2012, the company started the world’s first cigarette butt recycling program.

Wir haben eine öffentliche TerraCycle- Sammelstelle für die drei vorstehenden Sammelprogramme in unserer Bürogemeinschaft mit GRIVO in der Krossener Str. 2 in 10245 Berlin-Friedrichshain (Hof bzw. Seitenflügel links parterre) eingerichtet. Der gesammelte Abfall kann dort jeden 1. und 3. Donnerstag im Monat in der Zeit von 14:00 Uhr bis 18:00 Uhr abgegeben werden.

Es gib aber auch noch eine andere Möglichkeit, wie Zigarettenstummel nachhaltig entsorgt werden können: Anstatt sie in den Restmüll zu werfen, kann man sie zum Beispiel auch an das Recyclingunternehmen TerraCycle schicken. So ist es erstmals möglich, Zigarettenstummel wiederzuverwerten und aus dem Zigarettenabfall neue Plastikprodukte wie Transportboxen oder Aschenbechern entstehen zu lassen, die natürliche Ressourcen schonen, weil kein neues Plastik produziert werden muss.

Társaságunk az idei évben is örömmel csatlakozott az országos méretű tavaszi szemétszedési megmozduláshoz a TeSzedd! önkéntes programhoz. Az évről évre egyre több embert megmozgató rendezvény 3 napos időtartama alatt mintegy 110 ezer önkéntes segítőt csalt a helyszínekre. A rendezvény célja, hogy Magyarországot közösen megtisztítsuk a guruló hulladéktól. Az OHU által szervezett akció ebben az évben csatlakozott az Európai Bizottság EWWR LIFE+ programja keretében meghirdetett „Tisztítsuk meg Európát!" kezdeményezéshez. A nemzetközi összefogásnak köszönhetően május 10-én 16 európai uniós és 5, a közösségen kívüli országban tartottak a TeSzedd!-hez hasonló szemétgyűjtési akciót.

Wenig nachhaltig: alle rauchen und alle trinken Bier. Trägt zumindest zum Spaß in der WG bei. Für das Kippenproblem hat sich auch zufällig eine Lösung gefunden: TerraCycle macht Stummelrecycling, seit heute sind wir ein Sammelteam. Denn das finde ich ja mal eine wirklich gute Idee, aus dem, was zumindest optisch und olfaktorisch mit die größte Verschmutzung darstellt (außer versifften Platiktüten) was Neues zu produzieren.
