Happy Flip Flop Friday!

Happy Flip Flop Friday! It looks like my favorite budget friendly store Old Navy has joined forces withTerracycle to help us all recycle our old flip flops. What a great idea. Every time you send your old flip-flops to TerraCycle, you’ve done a green deed for Mother Nature by diverting waste from our landfills. To show our gratitude, for every shipment of about 25 pairs of flip-flops, or 50 individual flip-flops (about 18 pounds), you will receive exclusive coupons from Old Navy to distribute to the participants who helped you collect. It’s totally free to participate in a TerraCycle Brigade. There are no signup or participation fees, and the shipping is covered by the program. Once you’ve joined the Flip-Flop Brigade, follow the steps below to earn your Old Navy coupons:
  1. Collect about 25 pairs, or 50 individual, flip-flops (all brands are accepted) and fill up a box or bag. Remember to always reuse a shipping box or bag and use eco-friendly padding as needed. To receive your Old Navy coupons, you must ship at least 18 lbs of flip-flops.
  2. Download a pre-paid shipping label from terracycle.com. Just visit your TerraCycle account online, and click “SHIP US YOUR WASTE”. You can print it out yourself or request a label from TerraCycle.
  3. Ship the box to TerraCycle by affixing the pre-paid postage label and dropping it off at a UPS location.

Message in an Up-cycled Bottle

By Karen Creed-Thompson from EcoParent magazine - www.ecoparent.ca Founded in 2001 by Toronto native Tom Szaky, TerraCycle is a world leader in the collection and reuse of post-consumer waste. Actively collecting non-recyclable or hard to recycle materials and turning them into affordable green products, TerraCycle Canada has collected 4,038,378 units of waste to date and is forecasting 6,800,000 units for 2012, with its international operations collecting over 2.8 billion units of waste globally. TerraCycle Canada works with more than 14 major brands to collect used packaging and products that would otherwise be destined for landfills. Glad, Mr. Christie’s, Nestlé, Sally’s, Tassimo, Kool-Aid, Huggies and Garnier are just a few of the corporate giants already on board. The company’s Mississauga warehouse is filled with stockpiles of used products like sandwich bags, drink pouches, pens, inkjet cartridges, e-waste... and an assortment of other packaging from cookies, to personal care products. (A complete list of items for collection can be found at www. terracycle.ca.) All of this waste was reclaimed through TerraCycle’s Brigade® programs, which pay individuals and groups for the items they collect.

Valley News - LVC Campus Encouraged to Upcycle with TerraCycle

A new initiative by LVC’s Sustainability Committee provides a unique way to upcycle products typically thrown away on campus. TerraCycle creates collection and solution programs for non-recyclable waste, and will be rolled out on campus in time for move in day. Residential Life area coordinator Michael Schoch is spearheading the TerraCycle effort on campus, along with his “green team” of resident assistants, building representatives, and Sustainability Committee members. “The TerraCycle project is another opportunity for LVC to continue to become as sustainable as possible, Schoch said. “It is the team’s hope that we can reduce waste on campus by educating our community about new items that can be upcycled instead of being thrown into general waste. In turn, by simply changing behavior, we will be able to collect points/money and send them off to charities.” Schoch has prior experience with a successful TerraCycle program. During his graduate studies at Millersville University he worked closely with a professor to implement upcyling within a residence hall on campus. “It is my hope to include and encourage the LVC campus community to get involved and contribute to a more sustainable society.”

Old Navy and TerraCycle Canada Launch the First National Waste Collection Program for Flip-Flops

If you visited households throughout Canada, chances are you’d find at least one pair of flip-flops (if not more) in each. Unfortunately, every pair of flip-flops Canadians throw out ends up as waste in landfills. That is changing thanks to a partnership between Old Navy and TerraCycle Canada that now makes flip-flops recyclable.

Recycle Flip Flops With TerraCycle & Old Navy

TerraCycle and Old Navy are encouraging us to ditch our old flip flops and donate them to their new recycling program. To be a part of this great green initiative, become part of the Old Navy Flip-Flop Brigade and start scouring for old flip flops. The companies encourage participants to send 50 pairs of rubber flip flops of any brand in a bundle. To show their appreciation for your efforts, they'll send you some Old Navy coupons, which you can distribute amongst your friends who've given up their old flip flops for the cause. It could get pricy to send such a massive parcel, but the Flip-Flop Brigade will cover all costs. You just need to download a pre-paid shipping label from the TerraCycle website and drop off your flip-flops to any UPS location. Those Old Navy vouchers are pretty alluring, but so's the fuzzy feeling that comes from doing good. The flip-flops are saved from a life in landfill and destined to become something more, like playground equipment or a park bench. Fifty flip flops sounds like a lot to collect, but if you start polling your friends and family I’m sure you'll be surprised by how many ratty rubber beach shoes they have hiding at the back of their closets!

TerraCycle Canada, Old Navy work on flip-flop recycling

Flip those flops into something new. TerraCycle Canada, which creates solutions for hard-to-recycle waste, and retailer Old Navy have partnered to create a national waste collection program for used flip-flops, the Regina Post-Leader in Saskatchewan reported. TerraCycle created the free Flip-Flop Brigade, which allows consumers to send their old flip-flops to TerraCycle and receive a coupon in return. The sandals will be recycled into products such as playgrounds, park benches and bike racks, the newspaper said.
