3 Tips for Packing a Zero Waste Lunch

January may mark the first month of the Western calendar, but for many, the August and September months truly punctuate the New Year. Students and parents can relate: Back-to-school season is a time for new beginnings. Now is a great time to reevaluate habits, schedule and routine as they relate to making minimal impact on the environment, and one way to do that is pack a zero waste lunch.
A more sustainable meal planning routine is something to strive for year-round, but in the spirit of fresh starts, here are three simple tips you can use to eat more sustainably when on the go:

School helps reduce landfill waste

CHARLOTTE – Oaklawn Language Academy is keeping snack pouches out of landfills. Through a free recycling program in partnership with TerraCycle and sponsored by Entenmann’s Little Bites, Oaklawn has helped the nationwide collection reach the milestone of 2.5 million snack pouches diverted from the waste stream. Along with keeping the pouches out of landfills, collectors earn points that can be redeemed for cash donations to the nonprofit or school of the collector’s choice. Donations have just passed $40,000.
Suzette Brown, a teacher at Oaklawn, has been collecting Little Bites packages with her son to improve their recycling efforts since 2012.

Franklin School: Wins Entenmann’s Little Bites: Make the Pledge Promotion

The school pledged to help the environment by reducing waste. One school was randomly selected as the sweepstakes winner of the promotion.

Franklin was eligible for this prize due to their recycling efforts, including a recycling corner which makes receptacles both accessible and eye-catching while encouraging people to think green.

TerraCycle offers free recycling programs funded by brands, manufacturers, and retailers around the world to help collect and recycle hard-to-recycle waste.

Through the efforts of collectors like Murdock, donations have just passed $35,000. “I am just one person trying to do what I can to not contribute to the ever growing landfills and piles of trash I see created every day when so much can be recycled or repurposed or reused,” said Murdock. “With TerraCycle, there's nothing that can't be recycled.  That's why I think it's so important for companies to get in the game and fund programs such as the one Entenmann's is involved in, making it a little easier for the individuals/consumer to help out the planet but also not have to spend so much money doing it.” TerraCycle is an international recycling company that finds innovative solutions for materials not typically accepted at municipal recycling facilities.
